Chapter Twelve

There was a first time for everything in Deagon’s world. It took a lot to surprise him. Having a right-wing activist sitting across the desk from him would be ranked up there with top-notch bombshells to drop into his lap.

Julian Marshal, the leader for the extremist group The Purity of Humanity, had come knocking just over an hour ago. The Purity of Humanity had been around for a few years, trying to remove the rights of the irregulars. The group claimed that rights were for living, breathing humans and not animals or Hellyon. Animals didn’t vote. Why should it matter how many legs they walked on? Vampyres were legally dead. Those who were smart enough to stay buried didn’t have the right to vote, so why should the bloodsuckers? More than their storefront, The Purity nutcases took out who they could when no one was looking.

“What can I do for you, Mr. Marshal?” Deagon asked, checking his watch.

He had about fifteen minutes before he had to prepare his next shipment. His Calyph would be arriving to do the grunt labor and transport the product. Those who had lived in the trenches knew the game and could play it blindfolded. He had no further use for outside help, not when he had men who knew the business better than anyone he could hire in.

“Your club will be raided at midnight. A warrant was signed a couple of hours ago.” Julian said, pushing an envelope across Deagon’s black desk. “We keep an eye on what warrants are signed and who The Netherworld is looking at. It’s in our best interest to know what’s going down in our city.”

Deagon grabbed the envelope then pulled out a copy of the warrant and a few photos. Captain Salas Warner—Des’ old boss—was standing in front of The Netherworld HQ, talking to a few suits, holding what appeared to be a folded-up warrant. Deagon flipped to the warrant. They were looking for drugs and weapons, both of which Deagon was fully stocked with. His walls were pretty much painted in blow and gunpowder.

“Where did you get this and how much is this intel gonna cost me?” Deagon asked, glancing up from a handful of reasons he’d be in jail before the sun came up.

“Like I said, it’s in our best interest to know what’s going down in our city. One never knows what information will come in handy,” Julian answered. He moved closer to the desk and lowered his voice as if he feared being overheard. “I have a few men with me here tonight. We can help you move out your product to a safe location. In turn, we are in need of a man like you.”

Deagon leaned back in his chair, looking at his watch again. The warrant would be executed in just over an hour. He couldn’t move the product without being caught. The feds were probably circling the wagons as they spoke.
